Cambodia: An Unlikely Paradise for Trekkers and Hikers?

When you think of trekking, images of the Himalayas or European trails often come to mind. Cambodia, with its flat rice paddies and humid heat, might not seem like an ideal destination. As a passionate hiker living here, I’ve asked myself: can you really go trekking in Cambodia? The answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.
Jungle Treks: A Risky Gamble?
Let’s be honest, the Cambodian jungle isn’t the perfect playground for a multi-day expedition. I tried a jungle trek myself in Ratanakiri, and while the nature was beautiful, the tourist offerings often fell short. You might find yourself going around in circles instead of venturing deep into the wild. For a true immersion, a good local guide and a reputable agency are non-negotiable. The key is to manage your expectations: in Cambodia, a "trek" is more about a rich, authentic journey than a physical challenge.
Cambodia: A Land of Historical and Natural Walks
To dismiss Cambodia based on that single disappointment would be a mistake. If you’re like me and love long walks, the country is full of options. The approach is different here: it’s not about performance but about discovery.
1. A Walk Through History
This is where Cambodia truly shines. Forget the crowds at Angkor Wat and go explore more secluded temples. It’s while walking through the trees and ruins of places like Sambor Prei Kuk or Banteay Chmar that you’ll feel the country’s true magic. You’ll feel like an explorer, far from the beaten path. These ancient sites, reclaimed by the jungle, offer a unique blend of historical wonder and natural beauty that you can only appreciate on foot.
2. Hidden Natural Gems
In addition to the temples, natural walks are definitely possible. The short hike at Kbal Spean, not far from Siem Reap, is a must for lovers of history and nature. It’s a pleasant immersion to discover the "River of a Thousand Lingas" and the surrounding nature. If you are further south, the Kep National Park offers a magnificent half-day hike with breathtaking views of the coast. The Kirirom National Park or walks on the islands are also great options for a different, more open type of nature.
Beyond the Mainstream: Authentic Walks for Adventurers
For those ready to venture further, there are other hidden gems that highlight Cambodia's diverse landscapes.
Battambang and its Countryside: Exploring on Foot
Beyond the main city, the real charm of Battambang lies in its tranquil countryside and rolling hills. A highlight is the climb to Phnom Sampeau, a "boat mountain" that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding rice fields. Stay until sunset to watch thousands of bats pour from the "Bat Cave" in a truly unforgettable spectacle. This is an easy and incredibly rewarding walk.
Mondulkiri: A Walk Through the Forest
If you are looking for a more immersive jungle experience, Mondulkiri is a great option. Unlike the treks that disappointed me, this region focuses on a different approach. Many local ecotourism projects, like the Mondulkiri Project or the Elephant Valley Project, offer guided walks through protected forests to observe semi-wild elephants. These are not about covering ground, but about connecting with nature and wildlife in a way that supports local conservation efforts.
The Cardamoms: For More Experienced Trekkers
Considered Southeast Asia's last great forest wilderness, the Cardamom Mountains offer the most authentic trekking experiences in Cambodia. From villages like Chi Phat, you can organize tours with local guides that range from day hikes to multi-day jungle treks with overnight camps. You'll cross rivers, discover hidden waterfalls, and get the opportunity to observe unique flora and fauna. This is the ideal option for those who crave a true adventure.
One final piece of advice...
If you want to venture into more remote areas, never go alone. Local guides are a valuable resource, not only for safety but also for their knowledge of the environment, history, and people. They can turn a simple walk into an unforgettable journey.
